In short
- We ran the Nimbiq Website Grader across 207 industrial websites. Five findability patterns kept repeating.
- The two most common, by the numbers: 79 sites had no site search at all, and 106 buried answers in navigation overload.
- The 14-page 2026 Findability Benchmark — all five patterns, what each one costs you, how to fix each — is free in the Growth Kit.
Somebody lands on your site with a problem. A line is down, a retrofit is overdue, a plant expansion needs an integrator. The answer is on your website — your team wrote it, probably years ago. The visitor never finds it.
We wanted to know how common that really is, so we built a grader that scores industrial websites on findability and ran it across 207 of them — anonymized, no names attached. The same five patterns showed up again and again. Two of them we can put numbers on. The other three showed up too often to ignore.
The five patterns
- No site search at all. 79 of 207 sites had no search box, period. Not a bad one — none. On a 200-page site, that is 200 pages with no search shortcut — every one behind navigation the visitor has to guess right.
- Navigation overload. 106 of 207 bury answers three or four levels deep — capabilities under menus under menus, solutions scattered across subsites. Every extra level is a decision the visitor has to get right.
- Written for insiders. Pages organized by product taxonomy, not by visitor problems. The buyer thinks in applications and standards; the site speaks in series names and SKUs. Same information, no shared vocabulary.
- Proof where nobody looks. The evidence a buyer actually needs — project write-ups, application notes, the details that prove you have done this before — lives in PDFs that are thin on the keywords anyone would guess.
- A homepage that fails the 30-second test. A cold visitor gives the homepage about half a minute: what you do, who it is for, how to start a conversation. Homepages we graded routinely spent it on the company story.
The fixes, in brief
Every pattern has a fix, and none of them require a rebuild. Each one maps to a piece of the Growth Kit:
- No site search → the Site Search Audit Kit: check whether your search box actually works, and read the query log nobody is reading.
- Navigation overload → the 5-Minute Self-Audit Checklist: eight yes/no questions, every "no" a leak, ordered by how common each gap is.
- Written for insiders → the Answer-Content Style Guide: how to write pages that answer in the visitor's words instead of your taxonomy.
- Proof where nobody looks → the Answer-Content Style Guide, plus the benchmark's section on where proof gaps cluster and what to surface first.
- The 30-second test → the Homepage Rewrite Worksheet and the 10 Questions Your Homepage Must Answer: pass/fail, in ten minutes.
The benchmark itself is the 14-page version of this post — all five patterns, what each one costs you, and the fix for each. It is one of eight downloadable pieces in the kit, and it is free.
What the kit will not do
Worth being straight, because a checklist cannot do everything:
- If your site is a dozen pages, you do not have a findability problem — fix the navigation and the homepage and call it done.
- If almost nobody visits, fix traffic first. Nothing in the kit converts visitors you do not have.
- No worksheet writes the answers for you. The kit tells you what is missing and in what order to fix it; the knowledge still has to come from your team.
The kit is useful whether or not you ever talk to us. That is the point of it.
Run it on your own site
The thirty-second version: run your site through our free website grader — score, grade, and top findings in about a minute. Then grab the Growth Kit for the full benchmark and the checklists.
For the deeper read on why search alone does not save you, see your site search works, but your visitors still can't find anything. For the cold-visitor problem behind all five patterns, see why industrial websites lose first-time visitors. And if you are weighing who does the work of fixing any of this, setting up an off-the-shelf chatbot is the job.
